165 different ways to measure talent

Category: News

Our radars already have 165 different metrics with which to measure performance and talent. 165 options to know everything about each player.

A few weeks ago, we shared one of our latest innovations in driblabPRO; the tailor-made platform for all professionals in the football industry that our customers enjoy to find players and measure their performance. With the flexible radar we give the opportunity that every need has the possibility to be covered with total autonomy. A radar that is tailor-made for you.

The radar is the clearest and most accurate way to know how a player is performing, but football cannot be limited to twelve metrics, which are the ones that appear on the radar for each position. A fullback can generate, for the most part, events that belong to those twelve metrics, but football is becoming more and more liquid and that leads to positions and players performing more and more different actions for each game situation. That’s why we can tailor the radar depending on the player’s characteristics or the team’s style of play.

Like the radar, our platform is constantly improving and innovating and from now on we have 165 metrics that we can use to build our customized radar. We will give an example that shows the usefulness of creating your own radar based on the style of play of the team in which the player plays:

Case Study. Joshua Kimmich – Metrics with the ball based on verticality

Bayern Munich is a team characterized by a very high pace of play and constantly and aggressively supplying the ball to their wingers. That’s why their midfielders must have the talent and personality to look forward and move the ball with speed and make it progress many meters and very often. In the following image we see on the left the standard radar of Kimmich as a midfielder. On the right we find a custom radar where we have included:

Passes to the box in play + % Ball retention in opponent’s field + Expected danger (xT) in play + Losses in own field + Key passes in play.

In this way we can measure the player in situations in which he will be constantly demanded, in a team that always plays in the opponent’s field, that is very vertical in its passes and that plays always looking at its wingers and its center forward.

We are Driblab, a consultancy specialized in the statistical analysis of players and teams; our work is focused on advising and minimizing risk in professional football decision-making in areas related to talent detection and footballer evaluations.
