‘Average Time’: the unusual case of Nice

Category: Team Analysis

Which teams have spent the highest percentage of time winning and losing? We discover the unusual case of the only team that has not spent a single second losing since the season began.

Trying to explain reality from different and multiple points of view, all of them complementary, is the main essence of advanced data. It is not easy to achieve this when what we are trying to explain is a game as unmanageable as football, much more random than other sports due to the number of players needed to play it, the singularity of playing it with the feet or the different rules, the best tactical book, which have been followed according to their needs or the search for greater spectacle.

A specific result may be the result of chance, but if a result becomes a pattern, we must pay attention to it. For some time now, our driblabPRO platform has had a function for consulting and analysing the competitive dynamics of teams. Among them, we have the possibility of knowing what percentage of the total minutes played a team has been winning, drawing or losing.

This season in Europe has been truly exceptional because, as we are about to enter December, there is one team that has not been behind for a single second: Francesco Farioli’s OGC Nice. A truly unusual exceptionality that includes eight consecutive clean sheets and only four goals conceded in the entire French championship. It’s not that they don’t know what it’s like to lose, it’s that they still don’t know what it’s like to lose.

Of all the teams in the big five leagues, only five others have lost less than 10 per cent of the time: Bayer Leverkusen, PSG, Bayern, Manchester City and Real Sociedad. By contrast, Union Berlin, with 56%, is the team in the five big leagues that has been losing the most time on the scoreboard.

On the other hand, we find the teams that have been winning the longest, with Bayer Leverkusen as the leading team, followed by Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain (always as outstanding teams for their dominance in the local championship), Manchester City, Inter Milan or Atlético de Madrid.

Founded in 2017 as a consultancy, Driblab has driven innovation through data in all aspects of professional football. Thanks to a transversal model, its database collects and models statistics in all directions. From converting matches and videos into bespoke data for training academies to developing cutting-edge technology, helping clubs, federations and representative agencies in talent scouting and transfer markets. Driblab’s smart data is used by clubs all over the world, with success stories such as Dinamo Zagreb, Real Betis and Girondins Bordeaux among others. Here you can find out more about how we work and what we offer.

No one misses more clear chances than… Erling Haaland.
