Kvaratskhelia’s legacy: discovering Georgia’s talents

Category: New Talents

Georgian football justifies more detailed scouting, managing to export valuable talent to all types of championships.

When Cristiano Giuntoli signed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia he surely hoped he was signing a great opportunity but not that he would become the great individual story of European football. The Serie A champion Napoli winger is the footballing leader of a country that is gradually ceasing to be a remote team, which everyone identified as having little tradition and no standards. And that is changing, despite the fact that already in the 1990s players like Sasa Kaladze, Georgi Kinkladze or Shota Arveladze played for big European clubs, becoming a place of emerging talent to watch with intensity.

The emergence of Giorgi Mamardashvili, who even led Valencia to sign a 2022 partnership with Georgian Premier League club FC Saburtalo; Zuriko Davitashvili‘s performances at Bordeaux and at the recent U-21 European Championship, Georges Mikautadze‘s extraordinary goalscoring efficiency at Metz and Giorgi Chakvetadze at Gent are the most high-profile cases, but Driblab’s extensive coverage makes it worthwhile to discover some of the country’s great U-23 talents.

Giorgi Gocholeishvili

Although he plays more like a winger or winger than a full-back, Giorgi Gocholeishvili proved to be well above average in the Georgian league, which earned him a chance at Shakthar Donetsk, where he has continued his progression with a great performance. He stands out for his attacking character, very aggressive and vertical in his driving and with a lot of presence in the final third of the field. 1.2 million market value.

Giorgi Moistsrapishvili

Although he has played less this season than last, one of the most interesting midfielders in Georgian football is Dinamo Tbilisi midfielder Giorgi Moistsrapishvili, an above-average player in terms of creativity, striking and ability to make the final pass. Last season, at the age of 20, he was the best midfielder in the Georgian league in our internal rating systems. His contract expires in 2024.

Irakli Azarovi

On the opposite side of the pitch, also as a winger, we find Irakli Azarovi, 21 years old, a Red Star player who has also been rumoured to join Shakthar Donetsk. A player with a lot of influence in the development, in the possessions that end in shots and in the creation of attacking plays, with problems in defence both in one-on-one and in the air. In just over 1000 minutes played in the Serbian league he was among the best in numerous offensive metrics. The team improved with him on the field in offensive partnership values, suffering more in defence.

Gabriel Sigua

Among the younger players with experience in the Georgian top flight is Gabriel Sigua, an 18 year old midfielder, 1’90m tall, who stands out for his aerial play and his ability to influence dangerous possessions, with personality and daring to get into the final third to filter balls. Nearing 1,000 minutes, he was called up to the U21 squad for the last European Championship. He is one of the most interesting projects in national football.
